TVETs answer to unemployment

German minister of state at the federal foreign office, Professor Maria Böhmer has called for strengthening of the technical relationship between Botswana and Germany in order to curb unemployment. She was speaking at a ceremony to celebrate 50 years of partnership with Botswana.

Botswana is in a partnership with Germany, which focuses on vocational training and has been running for two years under the title, ‘Strengthening Employment – Relevant Vocational Training in Botswana’.

“The focus of our cooperation lies in the development and strengthening of dual vocational training for your major economic branch, the mining companies.  This cooperation has to be consolidated and further developed.  This includes training qualified workers, who can secure prosperity and strengthen the foundations of society,” she said.  Dual refers to vocational training, which is mainly organised and carried out by companies on the job. It is supplemented by lessons at state vocational schools.  In Germany, the curriculum is determined jointly by the state and business in consultation with social partners.
