Botswana Railways (BR) got into an agreement with Transnet Engineering to lease refurbished bogies at no cost to the customer while the company manufactures new ones, Mmegi can disclose.

Investigations conducted by the Sunday Times, a South Africa publication, with the help of Mmegi have revealed that the bogies are not new. Bogies are part of the carriages’ suspension system that have been fitted on the coaches.

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Tshenolo Mabeo and the BR management have not disclosed this information before. Responding to allegations of corruption, Transnet spokesperson Mboniso Sigonyela said his organisation won the P180 million contract following a competitive bidding process with established manufacturers in which it excelled on technological innovation; delivery schedule and pricing.
