The winter started rather awkwardly for President Ian Khama who was clawed by a cheetah at an animal sanctuary at the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) barracks where he was the commander for 15 years.

The incident attracted international media frenzy and over two million Internet hits.

Nobody would have noticed the claws on the face of the President if only he kept a low profile until the face healed. But scratches were seen on the face of the President as he was addressing kgotla meetings in Kgatleng, and curiosity produced the story of the cheetah claws at a BDF enclosure.
