FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) secretary-general Tshekedi Khama and members of his faction are planning to go ahead with the idea of holding an elective congress contrary to a resolution made by the national executive committee (NEC) a month ago.

The latest development highlights that there are now two centres of power within the BPF and there is tension in the party.

In March this year, the majority of BPF NEC members rubber-stamped a decision to go for an extra-ordinary congress instead of going for an elective congress. The position was that an elective congress is divisive in nature and can further polarise the party in the process affecting its preparations for the 2024 General Election. Furthermore, a resolution was taken to have the BPF elective congress in 2025. The current BPF president, Biggie Butale who is spiritedly pushing for an extra ordinary congress, reportedly enjoys the majority NEC support.
