After the appointment of Leonard Sechele as the Director of Public Prosecutions and Ian Kirby as Judge President of the Court of Appeal there is now a strong rumour doing the rounds in legal circles that it will not be long before incumbent Attorney General Dr Attaliah Molokomme is replaced with Gaborone lawyer Parks Tafa. Those in the know say the post is for Tafa to refuse.

Since the creation of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions the Attorney General's position is no longer constitutionally entrenched and as such the Attorney General is said to be employed on contractual terms and can be asked to vacate her position if the President is not happy with her. According to Botswana laws the Attorney General is the principal legal advisor to the government. "A person holding the office of Attorney General shall vacate his or her office when he or she attains the age of 6o years or such age as may be prescribed by parliament."

When Mmegi asked the Attorney General whether she intends to leave her position soon or whether she is aware of any bad blood between her and her supervisor she replied in the negative. Speaking to us through her public relations officer she expressed concern about the rumour that she is leaving. "The Attorney General says she is not going anywhere," was the curt line from the PRO.
