Suspended sentence for predator smuggler

TSABONG: The Tsabong Magistrates Court last Friday gave Kealeboga Gasejewe a two-year suspended sentence and a P10,000 fine for hunting and capturing two cheetahs. Ike Raphael ordered Gasejewe to pay the fine before the end of July. With three others, Gasejewe was accused of illegally hunting and capturing two cheetahs at a wildlife controlled hunting area KD 20 near Magobeng ranches in Kgalagadi District. The men allegedly planned to smuggle the cats out of Botswana to clients in South Africa.

While his three accomplices quickly pleaded guilty and were fined P5,000 each, Gasejewe pleaded not guilty necessitating the separation of the trials.

In a lengthy judgment, Raphael said he was satisfied that Gasejewe had a case to answer and the witness testimony against him was consistent and reliable.
