Shebeen owners critical of traditional beer regulations

The government continues to be criticised for imposing the new traditional beer regulations, without considering the negative economic implications on traders.

Shebeen owners in Gaborone urged the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dorcas Makgato-Malesu, to revise the hours of operation, as they do not favour their businesses. They were speaking at the 'Traditional Beer Pitso' held at Boipuso Hall yesterday.

One sheeben owner who identified herself as Mma Rita, said that selling Chibuku (a traditional brew) from 2pm to 10 pm during weekdays and from 3pm to 10 pm on Sundays and public holidays, would lead to decreased sales and financial returns. She said that some of the traditional beer they sell is bound to expire before being sold off, due to the short hours of trade and asked for an extension.
