A senior police officer based in police headquarters, Gaborone was discovered on Saturday morning, hanging from the roof rafters at his cattle post in Letlapaneng, on the outskirts of Medie village.

While the Botswana Police Service's Deputy Public Relations Officer, Senior Superintendent Near Bagali, stated that they are still investigating the matter to understand the reasons behind the senior officer's suicide, social media reports suggest a distressing cause.

It is said that the Superintendent, prior to taking his own life, left a message indicating that workplace bullying drove him to this tragic end.

“Yes, it is true.

A senior police officer based in the police headquarters in Gaborone committed suicide by hanging at his cattle post at Letlapaneng. He was found by his herder hanging from the roof rafters, and the matter was reported to the police. We received the report at around 11am on Saturday,” he said.

Bagali said an inquest is ongoing to establish what drove the officer to take his own life. Moreover, he said the deceased’s names are still withheld as they are yet to inform his family members.
