SADC foreign to Batswana

As Botswana was not part of the liberation struggle fraternity in Southern Africa it does not share its values; this creates an additional alienating element for Botswana towards Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The claim has been made in the SADC Council of Non-Governmental Organisation (SADC-CNGO) report titled: “The SADC We Need; Towards Values-Based Regional Integration and Development”.

The report says lack of joint values in SADC might have only a ‘biological solution’, that is, when a new generation of politicians emerges. “Finally, in the next decade might be a chance that SADC might re-focus its value system,” reads the report. It says there was no hope that closing the gap between SADC declarations and actions could happen soon. As the existence of the SADC National Committee was unknown there was no institution that could bring SADC nearer to the people or the people of Botswana nearer to SADC. An unnamed opposition politician was quoted as saying: “There is no ownership of SADC in Botswana. Nobody knows what is going on within SADC.”
