'River of death' claims 12th victim

With its latest victim drowning on Tuesday last week, Boteti River is earning a reputation as the River of Death.

In less than two years, the river has 'swallowed' 12 lives, among them people doing their laundry, swimmers and people trying to cross it.

Police say eight of the victims died last year while four have died since the beginning of this year. The latest victim was a 33-year old Rakops man who drowned in the river last Tuesday. The Commander of Rakops Police Station, Onneetse Dumelang, told The Monitor that the man was returning home from looking for his stray cattle across the river when he drowned. A fellow herdsman got worried when the man had not returned home at dusk.
