FRANCISTOWN: A suspected conman appeared in court yesterday to face eight counts of allegedly obtaining by false pretence. The state alleges that unemployed Mbopi Gaolekwe, 37, swindled Mariam Mmannuku, a retired headteacher out of P360,000.

The accused allegedly took the money in various amounts during different dates between 2011 and 2012 in Francistown, Palapye and Shashemooke. The prosecution says that the accused approached the complainant and told her to give him money, which he was to keep somewhere in order for the money to produce sweat (moisture).

The sweat, the prosecution added, was to be used to cleanse the complainant of bad luck and various ills.  The money was to be returned to the complainant afterwards, but the accused never did so.
