Research finds SADC opposition oppressed

Opposition parties in the region continue to suffer from unequal and unfair access to public media, which is prone to the control of ruling parties and governments, a study by the civic organisation has found.

The Open Society Initiative in Southern Africa (OSISA), the Open Society Foundation Africa  Regional Office and the Electoral Commission Forum of the Southern African Development Community (ECF-SADC) released the study findings in Gaborone on Tuesday.

Researchers found that though elections and parties are guided by a code of conduct, it is not always easy for electoral management bodies to ensure equal and fair access to media by all parties.
