Commissioner of the Botswana Prison Service, Dinah Marathe has challenged the public to distinguish between people on remand and convicts. She highlighted the prison's efforts towards inmate rehabilitation and acknowledged the public's concerns about repeat offenders being granted bail.

Marathe explained that offenders on remand after being released continue to commit crime, but Prisons department cannot be blamed for their actions, because they usually hold them for a short period. However, she said they have made great strides towards rehabilitation of convicts stating that they managed to rehabilitate and prepare a lot of inmates for life after prison.

“I am aware of citizens’ concerns over bail granted to repeat offenders, but as a prison, we are doing a great job on our mandate of rehabilitating convicts, but we cannot say the same for people on bail who continue to commit cimes,” she said when addressing the media at the Prisons Officer’ Mess, Commissioner’s hall on Friday evening.
