'Public service approach crippled BMC'

Poor governance structures at the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) contribute heavily to the collapse of the parastatal and decline in the beef industry, the Parliamentary Select Committee of Inquiry into the BMC and the Decline of the Botswana Beef Industry has found.

The report says the single most important factor explaining the decline of the BMC in the four most recent years is a pervasive culture of poor governance inside the organization and its relation with other government agencies.

“Like many other organisations, BMC nominally recognised the importance of setting out policy with regard (to) corporate governance,” it says. “Various BMC’s annual reports highlighted that its operations are founded upon the principles of transparency, trust, accountability and integrity. It further sets out the structures aimed at implementing good governance.”
