Private schools decry immigration requirements

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Mount Pleasant Primary School manager Edna Swaniker says they face difficulties when trying to recruit qualified expatriate teachers due to strict requirements from the Department of Labour and Immigration.

Speaking during the school’s multi-purpose hall official opening over the weekend, Swaniker stated that the labour department insists on the schools employing local teachers. The requirement, she said, was impossible as Batswana teachers with the requisite qualifications and experience demanded by private schools are not available.

She also decried delays by the Ministry of Education and Skills Development in issuing teaching permits, something that affects their schools negatively.
