Prisoners who brutally assaulted warder identified

FRANCISTOWN: More than 10 prisoners have reportedly been fingered in the brutal assault of Principal Officer Lesego Lekgoanyana who was on duty on Sunday afternoon at the Selebi-Phikwe state prison.

“The situation at the prison has returned to normal. So far prison officials have identified more than 10 prisoners who took part in the assault. An internal inquiry is ongoing and its outcome is expected soon,” said an insider at the state prison speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not the authorised spokesperson of the Prisons Department.

Lekgoanyana, who is said to be in a very serious condition, has been admitted to the Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital (NRH) in Francistown at the male surgical ward. He was initially taken to the Selebi-Phikwe Government Hospital where he was immediately transferred to NRH on account of his severe injuries.
