FRANCISTOWN - At least four out of a total of six political parties in Botswana will be holding their congresses this month as the lifespans of their respective central committees end.

Most political parties in Botswana hold a congress every three years. While the main focus of a congress is to elect  new leadership, the delegates from wards, constituencies, regions and the various party organs such as the Women's Wing and the Youth League use the opportunity to address policy issues and give direction to the party leadership. Party congresses, the highest decision-making body in all the parties in Botswana also resolve internal differences in the party as well as take a stand on behalf of the party on issues of national or international interest.

The secretary general of the Botswana Peoples' Party, Shathiso Tambula says that his party will meet in Tatisiding from July 18-20. Although the programme is yet to be finalised, the BPP secretary general says that besides electing the central committee, the mandate of this years' congress will be to discuss ways and means by which to revive party structures in a bid to transform the BPP into a national party. The BPP will also discuss opposition cooperation in general and also within the context of the Tonota North by-election.
