The Village Magistrate Court was left in shock yesterday when allegations emerged to the effect that the police are offering P15,000 to potential witnesses to implicate David Modise in the murder of Michael Montshiwa.

Modise is charged along with two others for killing the Fairground Holdings chief executive officer last October.

The court was once again filled to the brim, with family members, police officers and lawyers when Modise mentioned for the first time this year. His lawyer, Kgosietsile Ngakaagae, told the court that they had grievances, which they intend to take up with the highest office in the Botswana Police Service. He related to court how, on January 9, when Modise went to the Gaborone West Police station for his daily reporting he was harassed and arrested by the police. “My client (Modise) went to the station as is duty bound, in terms of his daily reporting as per his bail condition and he was then arrested by the Gaborone West police and was held under their custody until lunch hour,” Ngakaagae said.
