Police launch massive hunt for four escapees

Rakops police have launched a massive hunt for four remand prisoners who escaped from police custody while being transported to Maun Prison from Letlhakane Magistrate's Court on Monday morning.

Station Commander, Superintendent Onneetse Dumelang, confirmed the escape, which occurred when the police vehicle carrying them approached Motopi village.  Dumelang said there were 10 accused persons from Maun Prison who appeared for mention in Letlhakane that morning. He said since Letlhakane Prison was being renovated, offenders in his policing area are either sent to Maun or Serowe prisons. However, because of its proximity, Rakops sends offenders to Maun Prison.

"When the vehicle approached Motopi, officers heard noise coming from the rear, when the driver stopped to check what the matter was, the four jumped out of the vehicle and fled," he said. It has turned out that the four, who were in leg irons and handcuffed, unhooked the shooter of the canopied vehicle, after they peeled off the rubber lining of the back window and removed the windscreen.
