Following the urgent tabling of the National Assembly Salaries and Allowances Amendment Bill by the assistant minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Phillip Makgalemele, opposition MPs moved to block the proposed law from being debated.

The MPs challenged merits of the urgency of the bill as pushed by Makgalemele.  Opposition whip and MP for Francistown South Wynter Mmolotsi saw no reason for the urgency, adding that parliamentarians could not move to debate their salary review while their representatives have not received a salary increase.

“Let me remind the minister that there are members of the public service waiting for salary increase. The Public Service Bargaining Council is still ongoing and there are cases registered at the High Court. It would not be wise to move with certificate of urgency for MPs until all public officers are sorted,” said Mmolotsi.
