Parliament Passes Political Funding Motion

Parliament has passed a motion to request the government to fund political parties.

The motion sponsored by Botswana Congress Party legislator Bagalatia Arone, was passed through a 13-10 vote on Friday, in a session where the majority of ruling party members were away.

When presenting the motion, Arone said what was of great importance was to fight for the principle of party political funding in a democracy, not what type of model the country adopts. He said political party funding could be tackled from two ends: funding for a political party to maintain itself and funding for election campaigns.
