Speaker of the National Assembly Dithapelo Keorapetse has adjourned today's Parliament proceedings amidst the ongoing floods in Gaborone.

Keorapetse said that the decision to adjourn today's proceedings comes after Members of Parliament raised concerns about the floods situations in the country. Meanwhile, the MPs indicated that they would like to lend a helping hand to first responders to the disaster. "After consideration with leaders of political parties represented here, leader of the house, all the whips and mother of the house. I have concluded that it is unturnable to continue with today's seating," Keorapetse said.

The Speaker stated that the business of Parliament will continue tomorrow.

"So today's proceedings are adjourned for the convenience of the house. We adjourn," ordered Keorapetse.

Still on the matter, the Minister of Basic Education and Child Welfare Nono Kgafela-Mokoka has announced that all government schools are closed as the situation is deteriorating. The schools will be closed from tomorrow until Monday 24 February 2025.

Botswana continues to experience heavy rains across the country.
