P20m for airport fire fighting trucks

Central Transport Organisation (CTO), the government transport arm, has bought three sets of state-of-the-art fire fighting equipment for use in airport fire emergencies, at a total cost of nearly P20 million (1.9 million pounds).

British supplier Carmichael Support Services Ltd is the provider of the firefighting equipment.
According to the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Board's statement released this week, CTO has made the final payment of about P12 million for the three giant COBRA 6 x 6 Emergency Airport Crash Fire Fighting trucks. According to the company profile Carmichael Support Services is a subsidiary of the conglomerate Amdac Carmichael Ltd a major supplier of fire-fighting equipment in both the UK and internationally. "Amdac Carmichael is the largest and only UK Company producing a full range of fire-fighting vehicles. A healthy UK market share is enjoyed and forms an important manufacturing base, however 70% of the company's production is exported. Carmichael has customers in more than 80 countries around the world" states the company's website.

According to the company the Cobra 6 x 6 is part of its latest line of trucks, which range from 4 x 4 to 8 x 8 wheelers with water capacity ranging from 4, 000 litres to 14, 000 litres. The truck is already in use in airports across the world, states the company.  The acquisition of the fire-fighting equipment specifically formulated for airport situations, follows the recent redevelopment of the country's major airports Seretse Khama International, Francistown, Maun, and Kasane.
