SELEBI-PHIKWE: Members of the opposition have strongly condemned BCL management’s position that low commodity prices is the reason for the mine’s current financial situation.

They blamed the situation on lack of proper planning and misuse of funds by both the government and the mine management. Botswana Congress Party (BCP)president, Dumelang Saleshando said it is not unusual that commodity prices fluctuate but government rested on its laurels during the time when prices were good and the mine made huge profits. He was addressing a political rally here on Saturday.

He said instead of reserving some funds to cushion the mine when the markets prices become unfavourable, the money was misused. “Now there is no money to keep the mine afloat as we await the commodity prices to improve. Other countries do not retrench or feel much impact because they have planned for times like these because they know it ought to happen,” he said. He said as BCP they have no intention whatsoever to run a government that is swimming in corruption, but they want to uproot it.
