Of sex workers, the study and cruel work

A group of local and foreign prostitutes have condemned the punitive approach government has adopted after they were duped into coming out and discussing their plight with a study group. They believe the study was a ploy to flush them out, Mmegi Correspondent LERATO MALEKE talks to the sex workers

The study was conducted by the Ministry of Health on Integrated Behavioral and Biological Surveillance Survey (IBBSS) of HIV/STI among Female Sex Workers (FSW), Men having Sex with other Men (MSM) and People Who Inject Drugs (PWID). Mmegi can reveal that two weeks ago four foreign sex workers were detained at the Central Police Station awaiting to be deported to their country of origin (Zimbabwe) and that these are members who participated in the recent survey.

Mmegi also met a group of sex workers under Sisonke, a sex workers organisation, the same day that they had gone to check their colleagues at that police station. They fear that the survey was a plot to nab them; therefore they feel that they have been betrayed, cheated and abused by the Ministry of Health.
