A Mogoditshane car dealer learnt a painful lesson recently when a man masquerading as a prospective buyer turned out to be a trickster when he made away with his truck during a test drive.

The prospective 'buyer' had just left the garage accompanied by a garage employee when on the way the man made a phone call that left the employee traumatised. Superintendent Boemo Bok of Mogoditshane police said the matshelonyana truck driver had called someone on his cell phone and proceeded to place the call on speaker mode for the garage employee to overhear their conversation.

He said the employee reported hearing the truck driver telling the man at the other end that "I have managed with the truck" to which the recipient of the call responded "It's fine, bring him over, we will kidnap him and demand money". He said confused and fearing for his life, the employee opened the door of the moving truck and jumped out when the driver slowed down to negotiate a bend, and ran away unharmed. Bok said the police have since launched a search for the trickster, adding that the truck had still not been found by Sunday. He cautioned car dealers to take precautions when dealing with customers, as not every customer is a customer.
