New system to save BEC P25m next year

The Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) says it will save about P25 million, which it has been paying for the processing of national examinations in the United Kingdom (UK), when it introduces a new system next year.

The BEC said yesterday that the new web based instrument will be called the Botswana National Examinations Processing System (BNEPS). The system will enable localisation of the BGCSE whose registration is still done at the Cambridge International Examinations. BEC hopes that this will reduce examination result turnaround time. BNEPS would also improve the BEC documentation process and data gathering for all the national examinations levels - Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), Junior Certificate Examination (JCE) and the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGSCE) against the traditional way of recording data, which was done manually.

BEC Data processing manager Oduetse Setlhare said the project will allow educational centres to register and modify entries unlike the current set up where entries are collected from centres then sent to BEC by post for scanning. Moreover, the BNEPS sub-process, dubbed MALEPA, will help automate the management of material for instance printing of coursework forms at centres. Previously material was sent by post and courier, which Setlhare said was costly.
