MPs urged to make climate change topical

Members of Parliament have been urged to include climate change in their campaign messages because the electorate are the very people affected by its adverse effects.

Presenting at an orientation workshop for the Parliamentary Committee on Climate Change yesterday, the Director of Environmental Affairs, Steve Monna, said the aftermaths of climate change were felt not only in maritime countries where oceans were transforming and icebergs melting; here at home, droughts and floods were becoming more evident.

"There is a need for legislators to talk to people about the issue," Monna said. "As the people's representatives, you should help cultivate a low carbon society."  Monna said one of the drastic effects of climate change was the change in ecosystems and disturbance of habitats, hence movement of species which would affect the tourism industry.
