MPs Support Maoto's Motion

A motion by Member of Parliament for Francistown South, Khumo Maoto, calling on the government to introduce pre-primary education in all public schools, received overwhelming support from both the ruling party and opposition MPs.

A proposed amendment by the Minister of Mineral Resources and Water Affairs, Ponatshego Kedikilwe, was defeated. Kedikilwe chaired the 1994 commission, which reviewed the education policy and came up with some recommendations.

Debating his motion, Maoto said due to unaffordability some Batswana are not able to send their children to pre-primary schools. He argued that there was a need for government to introduce pre-primary education in all the council primary schools. Maoto said there is a huge difference between children who attended pre-primary schools and those who did not. He added that those who attended pre-primary education adjust easily when they start Standard One.
