As expected, the motion by the Gaborone South MP, Akanyang Magama which calls for direct election of the president was defeated in Parliament on Friday. The motion called for the amendment of Sections 32 and 35 of the Constitution to provide for the direct election of the president.

The motion called for abolition of automatic succession to the presidency by the vice president.

However, the motion was shot down by Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) MPs who argued that: "if it ain't broken don't fix it".
