Mohohlo decries slow promotion of women

Bank of Botswana governor, Linah Mohohlo has lamented the slow pace in the rise of women to positions of influence in the country's politics.

She told the International Women's Day Commemorations held at the French ambassadors' residence on Friday that countries like Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa and Rwanda that have surpassed the 30 percent threshold of female representation in decision making positions must be applauded.

"Here at home the situation is somewhat dismal, there are only five positions (far less than five percent), out of 62, occupied by women in Parliament," she said. She said that it is important to do more to redress the status quo in Botswana and the rest of Africa.
