President Duma Boko has hailed former president Festus Mogae as a voice of reason, unity and progress following the passing of the former president this morning at 0730

In an emotional address to the nation this morning, Boko confirmed the passing of Mogae who served as the president of Botswana from 1998 until 2008. “It is with profound sorrow and heavy heart that I address the nation this morning to announce the passing of the former president Festus Mogae who departed this life today on May 2026 at 0730,”Boko said. Boko reflected on the late statesman enduring influence on Botswana’s governance and international standing, describing him as a leader who carried the country’s name with dignity across the world. “Under his leadership, Botswana earned international respect for principled governance, sound economic management and a steadfast commitment to democracy,“ he said. Boko emphasized that Mogae’s legacy was rooted in discipline, integrity and prudent leadership, values he said helped position Botswana among Africa’s most respected democracies. He noted that even after leaving office, Mogae remained a guiding voice on national and international matters. President Boko said Botswana has lost not only a former leader, but a patriot whose entire life was devoted to public service and nation building. “Today Botswana mourns a distinguished statesman, a patriot whose life was devoted to the service of his country, ”Boko said. Mogae who was Botswana’s third president, was recognized globally for his cautious economic management and commitment to democratic governance during his tenure. Boko said Mogae’s leadership earned Botswana admiration internationally and inspired confidence in the country’s institutions. As the nation begins a period of mourning, Boko called on Batswana to continue building a country that reflects the ideals that former president Mogae upheld throughout his life. “May his life continue to inspire us to build a Botswana that reflects the ideals he so faithfully upheld, “he said. The president also extended his condolences to former first lady Barbara Mogae and her family, thanking them for their sacrifice and dedication to Botswana during Mogae’s years in public office
