The Minister of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security Eric Molale has told Ntlo-Ya-Dikgosi that the primary mining legislation (Mines and Minerals Act, 1999) was undergoing amendments in order to address illegal sand mining issues.

He said in the amendments proposed, one of the considerations was that of confiscation of equipment found carrying mined sand being either wheelbarrows, vehicles and others. 

He explained that his ministry suspended the awarding of mineral concessions for sand south of Dibete, in order to address the degradation of rivers, which had been rapidly impacted by illegal mining.
