Miners plead with BMWU to pay their loans

FRANCISTOWN: Embattled employees of the now defunct Tati Nickel Mining Company (TNMC) have asked the ‘rich’ Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU) to help them pay their loans.

The mineworkers, who face a bleak future following closure of the mine, voiced out their concerns during a meeting that was addressed by the chairperson of the Selebi-Phikwe Savings, Credit and Cooperative Society (SACCOS), Thatayotlhe Mpule, at TNMC clubhouse on Wednesday. The employees said BMWU should come to their aid since they have lost their jobs, which were their major source of income.

“Our loss of jobs was unexpected. It happened at a time when some of us owed various financial institutions money. BMWU is rich because of our subscriptions and has the potential to help us overcome our current problems,” Martin Nkhwa, a former employee of TNMC said to a big round of applause and murmurs of approval from his colleagues.
