Marshal's 'racial' approach a replica of the past

It has been noted that the system of communal farmers selling to largely white feedlot owners may not only be a reflection of the past but may be the default setting for the cattle industry if the role of the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) as buyer of last resort is eliminated.

The Parliamentary Special Select Committee of Inquiry into the BMC and the decline of the Botswana beef industry that was made public yesterday said this.

The report says the actual implementation of the entire Batswana agricultural system from oxen to the weaner stage was developed largely by BMC through the Direct Cattle Purchase (DPC) programme even though there had been policy statements since 2006.
