Men are more prone to be affected by mental health than their female counterparts, statistics provided by the Ministry of Health have shown. It has been stated that globally, approximately 1.3 billion people live with mental illness and out of that figure, 43,000 people in Botswana are affected by mental health.

“Of those affected in Botswana, 47.6% are females while 52.4% are males, with the most prevalent conditions being schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and substance and alcohol abuse,” officials at the ministry revealed as they joined the global community today in commemorating the World Mental Health Day . Moreover, an average of 300 suicide cases are reported in Botswana annually, the ministry added. “The Ministry, therefore, urges all Batswana to recognise early signs of psychological distress like anxiety, hopelessness, insomnia, or irritability in themselves and their loved ones, and to seek immediate support.” This year the commemoration is being held under the theme, “Access to services: mental health in catastrophes and emergencies.” It emphasises that supporting mental health needs especially during emergencies, provides strength to cope, a space for healing and resilience, which saves lives. “The Ministry calls on all Batswana to maintain strong connections with family and friends, extend support and respect to others, and prioritise vulnerable groups during catastrophic and emergency situations,” a statement from the ministry added.
