Male cancer is neglected - El Halabi

Although figures from the Botswana Cancer Registry show a high proportion of females being afflicted by reproductive cancers, male cancer is of concern because it is often "very much neglected".

Giving a keynote address at the launch of the month long commemoration on men’s health in Gaborone yesterday, the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health (Preventive Services), Sheenaz El Halabi, said most male cancers could be attributed to unhealthy lifestyles like tobacco and alcohol use.

“Between 2000 and 2001, Kaposi Sarcoma recorded 24% of patients affected by it, while cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx and cancer of the oesophagus recorded 11% and 10% patients respectively, and prostate cancer recording slightly lower at seven percent,” El Halabi said. “Cancer of the bronchus and lung cancer affected five percent of men in Botswana.
