Makgalemele is meddling in my constituency - MP

The MP for Shoshong, Duke Lefhoko has accused the president of the Botswana Football Association (BFA), Phillip Makgalemele of meddling in his constituency.

Lefhoko said Makgalemele and others who intend to challenge him during the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) primary elections next year, have been campaigning openly contrary to party regulations. He accused Makgalemele of hijacking social events in the village to advance his political interests. He said attempts by the BFA boss to hijack the recent visit by Zion Christain Church (ZCC) leader, Bishop Barnabas Lekganyane to Shoshong was snubbed by the church. The MP has not reported the activities of his opponents to the BDP because he regards them as lightweights who pose no threat to his ambition to defend his seat. Lefhoko said he is not against anyone who wants to challenge him. What he does not like is a violation of party rules and procedures. Though Makgalemele was beaten by Lefhoko in the BDP primaries in 2003, he wants to have another go.

It is not yet clear whether the BFA chief would relinquish his football post when he returns to politics. He denied that he has been campaigning in Shoshong before the party gives the green-light. "The party which I am a member of, has not yet allowed aspiring candidates including sitting MPs and councillors to declare their interests.  I therefore respect and subscribe to the rules and values of the party," he said.
