Lotsane school student gets electric wheelchair

SELEBI-PHIKWE: A Form Five student living with disability will be presented with an electronic wheelchair soon, thanks to the efforts of the staff at his school and Charleston Academy of Scotland.

Oabona Mogale of Lotsane Senior Secondary School has been permanently confined to a wheelchair after an operation that went wrong in 2008. The 19 year-old girl underwent surgery to correct a growth on her back but unfortunately, the operation did not go well and left her with a disability that meant she will be wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life. The operation was done when she was in Form Three and since then she has been using a second-hand wheelchair. Fortunately for Oabona, she was admitted to Lotsane at a time when the school had just assembled a committee to revive the spirit of compassion through a teacher, Jimmy Mathuba.

With the case of Oabona being a top priority, Lotsane school with its partner, Charleston Academy embarked on funding raising activities to buy a P30,000 electric wheelchair for her. The initiative has enjoyed a lot of support and goodwill from members of the community including President Ian Khama who donated P2,000.
