As the fifth session of the 10th Parliament opened yesterday, it was evident that the Leader of the Opposition seat will remain vacant indefinitely. The Speaker of the National Assembly Dr Margaret Nasha said the post will remain vacant until and unless the National Assembly amends the Standing Orders.

She said it is an undesirable situation, but one where nothing can be done about it, unless the Standing Orders are amended farther to prescribe what should be done in such situations. 

“This will be a matter to be discussed and agreed upon in one of the coming General Assembly meetings, and only then, can an amendment to the Standing Orders be introduced,” she said. Nasha explained that it is now a fact that as the Speaker of the National Assembly, she made an attempt to overcome this impasse by encouraging the parties to form a coalition and elect one of their own to the position of Leader of the Opposition.
