Load-shedding is back

Most areas of the country were plunged into an all-too familiar darkness for about five hours yesterday as the Botswana Power Corporation announced that load shedding had returned, breaching a four-month lull in the supply crisis.

Between January and June this year, businesses and households suffered widespread, prolonged and in most cases, unpredictable, blackouts as BPC battled to bring all four 150-megawatt units at Morupule B into operation while regional imports tightened.

By the end of July, normal supply had been restored nationwide due to the commissioning of a third unit at Morupule B, complimented by two 160MW emergency plants and power imports ranging between 100 and 300MW from South Africa.
