This week, as the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) members rushed to the Tsholetsa House to submit their expression of interest in the party’s upcoming primary elections, Dr Thapelo Matsheka is one of the names you won’t see there. The current Lobatse legislator has capped his short political career by announcing his retirement from politics during a recent BDP meeting in Lobatse. Being in Parliament and to top it all in the Cabinet, comes with power, stature and perks that can be hard to leave behind, but Matsheka has made up his mind. Matsheka was dramatically arrested on August 2, 2022, by the DIS officers, its support staff, and members of the Botswana Police Service. Although he was never officially charged, Matsheka was arrested in connection with the disappearance and murder of an eight-year-old boy Tlotso Karema in Lobatse.

The incident literally ended Matsheka’s political career even before he himself could call it quits.
