Landlocked Botswana transit route for drug trafficking

Defence Minister Kagiso Mmusi has revealed that while the government is committed in curbing all forms of illicit trafficking of controlled commodities, the country’s landlocked position compromises it as a transit route and destination for drug trafficking and other transnational crimes.

Speaking during panel discussion on combating illicit trafficking at the US -Africa summit, Mmusi said the use and trafficking in illicit narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances has also reached a straining high pitch.

He emphasized that Botswana is geographically situated at the center of Southern Africa, surrounded by South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia therefore there is extensive international trade between Botswana and neighboring countries.
