FRANCISTOWN: The owner of a pitbull that recently killed a 25-year-old man from Mahalapye in Mogoditshane is likely to face recklessness and negligence charges, The Monitor has learnt.

This was revealed by the Mogoditshane Police Station's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer-in-charge, assistant superintendent Tumisang Mogorosi. Mogorosi said investigations in the matter are still continuing. He added that the police are still waiting for a post mortem report that was performed on the deceased. “We advise members of the public who are keeping pets like pitbulls to always take good care of these animals because not doing so can get them into trouble,” Mogorosi advised.

Although the Botswana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) said that their main objective is to keep animals under humane conditions with their welfare at the forefront, it advised that issues of dog aggression, dog-human aggression can be avoided by responsible pet-owner behaviour, which can be achieved through public education. “The owners of dogs, in particular, are advised to keep a dog that is the right fit for their households (breed, size, boisterous, high energy dogs amongst others).
