President Ian Khama has remained mum on Survival International (SI) and its continued call for a widespread boycott of Botswana's tourism sector.

Khama’s State of the Nation Address yesterday made mention of the tourism sector’s growth and government’s initiatives to improve citizen participation, but neglected to deal with SI’s calls for a boycott, a campaign that could paralyse the sector often estimated as the second highest contributor to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Opposition party leaders immediately condemned this omission and accused President Khama of “running away” from the issue.  Botswana Congress Party (BCP) president, Dumelang Saleshando, said he was disappointed that Khama did not propose any solution to the continued calls for a boycott of Botswana’s tourism from the London-based organisation that describes itself as a global movement for tribal peoples’ rights. Saleshando accused Khama of being the source of the problem that has led to SI’s calls for boycott.
