Khama condemns abuse of democracy

The outgoing Chairman of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), President Ian Khama has called on the regional body to avoid undesired outcomes of democracy.

Khama said this during the official opening of the Electoral Commission Forum of SADC Countries (ECF-SADC) 18th Annual General Conference yesterday.

“When I talk about peace and stability, I do so because I think we are all aware that democracy can give rise to instability. We have seen at the time when elections were held, there can be election violence, people even losing their lives, and we have seen this in recent times in the last few weeks in the SADC region,” he said. Khama said freedom of speech to entitle campaigning very provocative statements can result in unintended consequences.
