Is Khama the BDP?

FRANCISTOWN: Since the formation of the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) about three months ago, it has been President Ian Khama and not his ministers, who continues defending himself and the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) at star rallies.

Khama has been cited by the BMD as the reason for their defection from the ruling party. Under normal circumstances, his ministers and other party activists would be travelling the length and breath of the country defending their leader and de-campaigning their nemesis, BMD. The fact that Khama, the victim of the attacks, has to defend himself has raised eyebrows from opposition politicians.

The national chairman of the Botswana People's Party, Richard Gudu suggests that the reason why BDP ministers have not gone to the people on their own, to defend their president and party is that the BDP is still living in denial. By deploying teams to address rallies countrywide, the BDP, according to the BPP official, would be admitting that there is a crisis in the party.  Gudu goes on to say that either Khama is not comfortable with people addressing rallies in his absence or his ministers are not confident that anybody would take them seriously if they attempted to address rallies without Khama. Citing examples of parties such as the BPP and the BNF in Botswana, UNIP in Zambia, and the ANC in South Africa which have split, Gudu further says that, instead of living in denial the BDP must accept the reality of their situation.
