Institute Cracks Down On Bogus Estate Agents

The Real Estate Institute of Botswana is beginning to clamp down on bogus agents who have been swindling the people. The president of the institute, Motshwari Mooketsi told Monitor that they have started to work with the police to arrest unregistered estate agents.

He said the police are cooperating with them to curb the illegal practice of fly-by-night estate agents. He added that unlike in the past, the police are now treating swindles by estate agents seriously.

He said an estate agent has to be registered as required by the law. He indicated that the law requires that an estate agent must have at least a diploma in real estate management. In addition, an estate agent must have a certificate from the institute.
