As Botswana marked its 59 years of independence on Tuesday, a total of 34 newborns were delivered across the country’s major hospitals, with Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital leading the pack.
Figures shared by the Ministry of Health show that the two main hospitals, Princess Marina Hospital and Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital, each recorded three births on the day. Other facilities, such as Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital and Scottish Livingstone Hospital, recorded higher numbers. Health ministry spokesperson Christopher Nyanga confirmed to MmegiOnline that 10 births were recorded at Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital, whilst Scottish Livingstone Hospital welcomed eight. Athlone Hospital registered two births, Sekgoma Memorial Hospital and Deborah Retief Memorial Hospital delivered three newborns each, whilst Mahalapye District Hospital and Kanye Adventist Hospital each recorded one newborn.
Nyanga added that whilst some facilities, Bamalete Lutheran Hospital and Selebi-Phikwe Government Hospital, reported no Independence Day births, the overall figures reflected a day of joy for many families across Botswana. Nyanga congratulated the mothers on their safe deliveries and extended appreciation to the healthcare workers who assisted.
