IEC ready for Tonota North by-election

FRANCISTOWN: The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it is ready for the Tonota North by-election scheduled for September 4th.

In an interview yesterday, Secretary of the IEC, Gabriel Seeletso said preparations started immediately after the issuance of the writ of elections. He said that for the past two weeks, IEC officials have been criss-crossing the vast terrain of the constituency, mobilising people to go to the polls on election day. Voter education, with the use of visual aids, is being conducted throughout the constituency in order to maximise voter turn up and minimise spoilt ballots.

The IEC is, however, disappointed that attendance at the meetings has been very poor.  This is despite the fact that the meetings are announced well in advance. He surmised that people may not feel a compelling need to attend these meetings on account of the fact that they have been voting for a long time and therefore, think they have got nothing new to learn. He however is worried by the incidences of spoilt ballot papers.
